About the Poster Design for The Zoo
The core visual elements of this poster are the two actors and a bench — these three components form the heart of the stage performance. The title, The Zoo, inspired the use of the Chinese word “动物园” (zoo) as a conceptual square space, symbolically transforming the scene into a cage that contains the main subjects. To reinforce this metaphor, we added black-and-white high-rise buildings in the background, mimicking the vertical bars of a zoo enclosure.
Since the bench is central to the narrative, we creatively integrated the title The Zoo into the structure of the bench itself, blending form and meaning.
Visual Highlights
To add a focal visual element beneath the bench, we took inspiration from the script — which includes props such as a knife, the actors, the bench, a book, a photo frame and so on. In this adapted version of the play, performed in Penang, Malaysia, the director made several localised changes to reflect the cultural context. One notable addition is the element of “rubber”, referencing the use of “003”, a common nickname for Okamoto 003 rubber in Japan / Malaysia. We used “003 small square box” as a subtle symbol and placed it under the bench to serve as a playful and provocative visual highlight. Furthermore "Zoo" has its hidden meaning in the local.
Color Palette and Symbolism
The poster primarily uses red, blue, yellow, white (and black) — first 4 colours drawn from the Malaysia national flag, anchoring this adaptation of The Zoo in its local setting. Among these, red dominates the composition, representing emotional intensity and echoing a key moment in the play where a tragic death occurs.
